It’s not about me, it’s about them. I found out early on that self-promotion does not work on social media. Letting people know what you’re up is ok but try to avoid broadcasting – people will just switch off.
The best way to promote yourself is by promoting others. Be generous, take a genuine interest in what others are saying and they will reciprocate. What you give out you will get back in spades – promote others and they will promote you to their circle of influence. Build communities around you to increase your reach exponentially.
Share and share a-like on Facebook, follow people back on Twitter, accept connection requests on LinkedIn. Be open to all opportunities to move in unfamiliar circles – who knows, it may lead to surprising results!
Do it your own way, find what works for your own business and don’t just follow the crowd. A brand is much more than a logo or profile pic. Dress your brand differently for each social network — think t-shirt & jeans on Twitter, business suit on LinkedIn and whatever you like on Facebook. Mix it up a bit to keep it fresh and get noticed – don’t drown in a sea of sameness…
And have fun .. but remember to set targets. Time is money and money is time! It’s easy to lose track of it on Social Media when the craic is happening.
